Description

Styles covered in the third year include guajiras, soleá por bulerías, and either tarantas or malagueñas.

The guajiras is one of the cantes de ida y vuelta (songs that traveled to South America and back), offering a light, lyrical contrast rooted in Cuban influences. The soleá por bulerías is a unique hybrid style blending the solemnity of soleá with the lively rhythm of bulerías.

The tarantas and malagueñas represent a different type of flamenco known as free styles (toques libres), where musical expression is shaped more by melodic phrasing than by strict rhythmic cycles. These forms are a natural next step for students who have mastered flamenco's rhythmic styles. The study of tarantas also includes tarantos, while malagueñas incorporates material for verdiales.

Toque libre refers to playing with or without a regular compás. Mastering this freedom requires first internalizing flamenco rhythms.
